www.corleonelaw.com

Nohr has been practicing law in Hawaii for the past 28 years.

From 2002-2005, she was a district court judge at the Honolulu District Court

Author of LandSharks - about a cyclist in Olympics trials in Honolulu that gets hit by a car. Jordan then becomes paralyzed and hires Rip Mansfield in order to cash in his misfortune. Her next book; FreeWill is set to release in February of 2017.

Writing is also publication and marketing. Get into social media. Give away lots of bookmarks. Carry actual book, people curious about what you’re reading. Try to get pictures with people holding book.

Katharine’s ten tidbits:

  1. Most attorneys are civil to each other in Hawaii; with some exceptions.

  2. Only 3 % of the civil cases end up in trial. Drama happens more during a deposition than in the courtroom.

  3. Lawyers focus on facts of case. KN actually readds medical records rather than doing legal research.

  4. Work at home, is never referred to as “homework.”

  5. Practicing law is a business, profit is essential.

  6. Lawyers are diverse/unique who have other interests.

  7. Many focus evening energies on sideline things; writing, acting, sewing ...

  8. Law has changed with ties; use of e-mails, web ... with less need for secretaries.

  9. Attorneys see each other all over; like being in high school - much gossip.

  10. Much time in elevators –where a lot of conversation happens.

Q&A with Speaker

a) Anyone in Honolulu who is interested in negotiations in movie rights? ANS: possibly Roy Choo with Island Film Group Hawaii. He was an attorney with Goodsill Anderson Quinn and Stifel & left firm to start Island Film Group Hawaii. He did a review for LandSharks.

b) Publishers are strict about content. Consider name changes ANS: Dates in books also are a big “no-no” for publishers. Anyone can sue you in life for anything. Reality is that most people will not sue you for putting certain real things in novels.

c) Historical figures? If the family is still living, do you have to worry about liability? ANS: Yes - family to sign a release form. Check into intellectual property and writing.

d) When writing a Memoir, shall I go back and talk to people and ask their permission if I can use them in my book? ANS: Yes. You have to get releases from them. Everyone that you mentioned in the book, you need to get releases from them. It is better if they are dead.

2) BIG THANK YOU’S -Japanese bamboo plants given in appreciation to our outgoing Board of Directors: Gail, Rosemarie, Laurie and Dawn. The plants mean Life and Longevity.

3) SISTERS IN CRIME 30-YEAR ANNIVERSARY -Paretsky helped formed the Sisters In Crime, in October of 96. Visit Sisters in Crime website (www.sistersincrime.org.), to view the benefits. IE: Eleanor Taylor Bland Crime Fiction of Color award --- Dorothy Cannell Scholarship

Gail informed us that Makiki Community Library won a $1,000 for entering the “We Love Libraries,” which is why they love Sisters in Crime so much.

Looking into Barnes & Noble for book signings/readings in regards to SinC 30 Year Anniversary.

There will be an Author Connect event - 15 options. Pick an event to connect with authors. The event has only been done once before. Barnes and Noble are selling our (Sisters in Crime) books at Left Coast Crime 2017 Honolulu Havoc; and they (Barnes and Noble) admitted that they want to promote local authors.
