BABY BOY KEATING: Dennis’s son Kayden is growing with leaps and bounds. So cute too. Dennis is an at home daddy and still keeps up with SinC.

BE AWARE OF SINC SCAM: It has been reported that SinC is receiving scam attempts. The scammer goes to the chapter or national web page and takes the contact info and creates a fake email address in the name of the president. Then they email the other board members asking them to purchase gift cards.

HI FICTION WRITERS GROUP UPDATE: The state libraries are cancelling programs, events and meeting room bookings in March. Here's the link to the full announcement: The libraries will remain open, but here's the section on cancellations: https://www.librarieshawaii.org/2020/03/14/aloha-important-update-from-hspls/ THEY are receiving submissions for the Kissing Frogs and Other Quirky Fairy Tales, and that project is on track. Deadline to submit is June 1, 2020. Please review carefully the guidelines in the call for submissions, available on our website at hawaiifictionwriters.blogspot.com/. The website will have schedule updates, so be sure to check it out.

ONHOLD - Writers Workshop: "Another Opening, Another Fairy Tale." A look at the openings of traditional fairy tales. It's not always "Once upon a time." Fairy tales are often read aloud, in one sitting, so they are not long, they have to establish character and setting in the opening paragraph or two, and get on with the plot. How does your variation on a traditional fairy tale begin? Read and share. We will include Kurt Vonnegut's eight excellent rules for writing short stories.

*Saturday, April 18 (10 a.m. to noon) - Aina Haina Library - Writers Workshop: "Closing Time." A look at the closing paragraphs of traditional fairy tales. It's not always "They lived happily ever after." As the King in Alice in Wonderland famously said, "Begin at the beginning, and go on till you come to the end: then stop." Try writing the beginning paragraph or two, then the ending paragraph or two. Maybe write the middle last. If you don't know where you're going, how will you know when you're there? Read and share. (Note: Julius and Philip Epstein, the twin brothers working on the screenplay for the classic film Casablanca, did not know how to end it until almost the last minute, one morning when they were riding in to work.)

Adrienne Brodeur will offer a four day master class on memoir at the 2020 Kauai Writers Conference. Adrienne's Wild Game was named by Amazon best memoir of 2019. The New York Times writes: Wild Game was named a best book of the year by NPR, Buzzfeed, Washington Post, People, Library Journal and many others. Adrienne introduces the book: "On a hot July night on Cape Cod when Adrienne was fourteen, her mother, Malabar, woke her at midnight with five simple words that would set the course of both of their lives for years to come: Ben Souther just kissed me. Adrienne instantly became her mother’s confidante and helpmate, blossoming in the sudden light of her attention, and from then on, Malabar came to rely on her daughter to help orchestrate what would become an epic affair with her husband’s closest friend. The affair would have calamitous consequences for everyone involved, impacting Adrienne’s life in profound ways, driving her into a precarious marriage of her own, and then into a deep depression. Only years later will she find the strength to embrace her life—and her mother—on her own terms." Nearly everyone writing a memoir comes face to face with the question: do I dare write about that? What will my mother, my children, my spouse think? The reality is that the things we most fear to write are often what people most want to read. Adrienne will help you decide how to turn your own intimate and perhaps painful issues into captivating prose that people are compelled to read, into literature, and into a book they will want to own. We think this class will be a game-changer for people writing a memoir, whether they are just starting out, in the midst of it, or done but open to revision. We're especially enthusiastic to offer Adrienne's class and cannot recommend it highly enough.
