c) Shannon Laren worked for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department from 1985 to 2018. He worked three years as a Custody Deputy and eight years as a Patrol Deputy at four different patrol stations in a variety of assignments, including four years as a Station Detective. During this time he was involved in multiple Deputy Involved Shootings (D.I.S.) and Officer Involved Shootings (O.I.S.), and responded to countless other acts of violence. He also authored and served numerous high risk entry search warrants.

a) NOVEMBER 20, 6:30 pm Pacific - Ask Me Anything About Writing -- an informal evening discussing the challenges we all face writing crime fiction November 21, 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. Pacific time: The Essential Triangle - The sleuth, the victim, the villain What makes a great protagonist? What are some of the considerations you need to bear in mind about your subgenre that may affect choices about your sleuth? What are the “must haves“ concerning any sleuth? Does the victim need to be anything more than a dead body? Should the antagonist be anything more than a creepy dude with a knife? What do you need to keep in mind about these characters and the tensions between them?

b) NOVEMBER 21, 2020, 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Pacific time: Clues, Red Herrings and Suspense - What are some of the most basic mistakes writers make concerning suspense? How can you create a suspect who didn’t do it without making a reader immediately say, “Oh, this one didn’t do it!” What are some of the tools you can use to create clues that work? How do challenges with these elements differ based on point of view? These events are free and open to the public, but advance registration is a must. Space is limited to 100 people.

a) The are hosting award-winning authors Art Taylor and Tara Laskowski for an online Suspense 101 writing workshop on Clues, Red Herrings and Suspense -- What are some of the most basic mistakes writers make concerning suspense? How can you create a suspect who didn’t do it without making a reader immediately say, “Oh, this one didn’t do it!”

b) Art won the 2020 Macavity Award for Best Mystery Short Story for "Better Days." Tara won the 2020 Macavity Award for Best First Novel for One Night Gone. Check out their websites to see the many other accolades this husband-wife duo has collected, including the Edgar, Agatha, Anthony, Derringer, Mary Higgins Clark and Thriller awards.

4. KAUAI CONFERENCE:

Kauai Writers Conference is thrilled to announce a series of weekly online Zoom sessions, cosponsored by Poets & Writers, led by many of today's foremost writers. There will be two tracks: one for writers and one for readers. You may participate in either or both. You may subscribe either to all sessions or just the Kauai Book Club. We want these programs to be affordable to everyone. The cost will be just $49 per month for all sessions or $29 per month for the book club alone. The book club is included at no additional cost for people who subscribe to the writers' sessions.

6. DECEMBER MEETING – Celebration. Each member will write a Christmas story.

300-500 word count. Write a story of Christmas when you were 10 yrs old and all the other characters are members in Gumshoes Aloha Style to read at our meeting. We will figure out a reward for the winner for the funniest, most profound and best fantasy.
