5. AUGUST 15th - INVITATION: You're invited to join Luci Hannson Zahray at Coastal Cruisers (San Jose, Santa Cruz, Monterey) on August 15 at 10:30 Pacific Time for "Pick Your Poison." Luci Hannson Zahray is a retired pharmacist with an advanced degree in Toxicology from Texas A&M University and a natural sense of comedic timing. She's also an avid mystery fan in perennial demand at crime fiction conferences, including Malice Domestic where she was Guest of Honor in 2019 and her "Pick your Poison" sessions are standing room only. Dubbed "The Poison Lady" at Magna Cum Murder some 25 years ago, she lives to help your characters kill each other and get away with it, using easily accessible materials you might find in your own cupboards. While I expect she's lost count of the people she's killed, she's happy to help authors add to the body count accurately, delectably, and undetectably. She once named her dog Whimsey--after Lord Peter, of course. She's inviting us to take a peek inside her own "toy cabinet" where she keeps the poisons she recommends most frequently to writers. She typically opens with toxins in the news, and will talk to us about the topical dangers of methanol hand sanitizers. She will take questions from our audience, but will also be happy to brush up on any poisons anyone wants to ask her about ahead of time. If you have tricky poisoning problem or a particular toxin you want your villain to handle safely, send your questions to Mary Feliz at mcfeliz@gmail.com, and she'll forward them to The Poison Lady. 6. MONTHLY BOOK CLUB: The Colorado Chapter would like to invite other chapters to our monthly book clubs. Each month, we read and discuss a book published by one of our fellow chapter members. It's not a requirement to have read the book; this is more about camaraderie and meeting the author and other readers. :) On our website, we have a list of the upcoming books to read. Book club locations will not matter as the meetings will be held on Zoom for the remainder of the year. But since we are not sharing our Zoom links publicly, if you would like to attend one of these meetings, please email the book club coordinator of the meeting you would like to attend and she will send you the Zoom link when she sends out the book announcements. https://sistersincrimecolorado.org/book-club/

7. UPCOMING ZOOM MEETING FOR THOSE INTERESTED: This Saturday, 8/15, 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. (Eastern time), Buckeye Crime Writers of central Ohio is hosting retired FBI Special Agent and profiling coordinator Harry Trombitas via Zoom. A 29-year veteran of the FBI, Harry also worked in Omaha, St. Louis and New York before transferring to Columbus, and managed several cases in his career, including the internationally known Ohio Interstate 270/sniper attacks in 2003. He’s led successful investigations into organized crime, serial killings, bank robberies, kidnappings and other criminal activities, and became known publicly for his unique nicknames of perps, including descriptors such as the ‘Church Lady,’ ‘Mullet Man’ and the ‘Droopy-Drawers Bandit.’ Harry will be discussing some of his more memorable cases and what he’s learned as far as investigative techniques and forensics. Additional note: he’s a BCW fave. Along with his colorful personality, he’s enthusiastic, extremely knowledgeable and eager to share his experiences. So if anyone’s looking at gaining additional insight into detective work or just wants to sit in on a pretty exciting discussion, instructions to sign-in are below (note: attendance will be free but limited to a maximum of 100 attendees . . . please feel free to share with SIC members, but don’t post on social media or a public forum). Thanks and we look forward to seeing you!

8. NATIONAL EVENT GRANTS 2020: have been suspended for 2020 due to the pandemic. This means there will be no grant money for the Hawaii Book and Music Festival. I have not had an update as to if there will even be one. Will let you know as soon as I get some answers.

9. FUTURE MEETINGS: National does have a grant fund for us to handle technical needs for 2020 and possibly into 2021 (not certain about 2021 yet tho). Therefor if everyone wants to continue with Zoom after our Sept meeting- we will see if we can get a routine Zoom account for SinC.
